The memorial of the martyrs
The memorial of the martyrs, located in Qing Shan Park, is mainly to commemorate the revolutionary martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Dedu County (the city of Wudalianchi). It has ever been the base area of Anti-Japanese Union in the northeast. Numerous revolutionary martyrs shed their blood and sacrificed their lives for New China. The revolutionary martyrs named Zhao Qingshan sacrificed here. On Tomb-sweeping Day, the people voluntarily come here to sweep the graves and hold a memorial ceremony for the martyrs who were buried here. The high white tower and green grass and trees also show respect to the martyrs in silence. The people express the yearn for the revolutionary martyrs and the determination to carry forward the cause and create a more beautiful future on the couplets of two sides of the park "To cherish the memory of martyrs whose good fames will never fade. To raise the moral of the young whose great virtues shall live for long".
Zhao Qingshan was born in Han Cheng town, Xuan Yang county, He Nan province. When he was young, he studied in private school for three years. But after that, because his family was poor, he had to make and sell pockets to make a living with his father. Later, he gave it up and joined in military activities. From then on, Zhao Qingshan began to struggle against oppression. In 1926, when he wrested the guns from the civil guard police, he was captured by Zhao Fengcai who was the self-defense regimental commander of KMT. At last, he escaped with the help of the villagers. He lived a vagrant life and made a living as a performer. He joined in the Northeast Army and had ever been a soldier, squad leader, platoon leader and so on. When National Anti-Japanese War began in 1937, he joined in the Eighth Route Army. Zhan Qingshan joined in the Communist Party of China in 1939 and participated in the fight in Shanxi, Gansu and Ningxia region in different periods. After the Anti-Japanese War was over, he came to the northeast with the cadres of the Central Committee in September 1945 and reached the city of Bei An on November 15 in the same year. He was sent by the working committee of Heilongjiang province to De Du county to carry out some work with Qu Changchun and Bian Jing on November 22. He was appointed as the member of working committee in De Du County and assistant battalion commander of the people’s autonomous army. In the same year, Zhao Qingshan was killed in counter-revolutionary rebellion by the company commander of rebel army named Zhao Fa outside of west gate of De Du County. In memory of Zhao Qingshan, the political, economic and cultural center of Du De county is renamed Qingshan town and the new Nemoer River Bridge is named Qing Shan Bridge by the people of De Du county (Wudalianchi) in order to express endless grief and yearning.
